Rep. Vargas Names Betty Cloud of Imperial County “Volunteer of the Year”
El Centro, CA (April 30, 2013) –Today, Congressman Juan Vargas (CA-51) delivered the “Volunteer of the Year” award to Imperial Valley resident Betty Cloud. In honor of National Volunteer Week, Congressman Vargas acknowledged Betty Cloud for her exceptional volunteer service and countless hours serving the Imperial County and working to better the 51st Congressional District.
“I am thrilled to present Betty Cloud with the “Volunteer of the Year” award, honoring her lifetime of volunteerism and selflessness” said Rep. Vargas. “Her continued dedication to our community has made her a wonderful example of the immense difference one person can make in the lives of others.”
Currently, Cloud serves on the Center for Family Solutions’ Board of Directors. For over five years, she has dedicated herself to providing shelter, safety, services, and security for victims of domestic violence and their children. Her drive to assist those who have been victimized has helped increase awareness and decrease the number of domestic violence instances in Imperial County.
Cloud served as the Executive Director of the Imperial Valley Food Bank (IVFB) for over five years. During her tenure, she helped make the IVFB an organization that is very active and visible in the community. She has worked diligently to ensure that families in the Imperial Valley are never without food.
In addition, Cloud was a member of the Board of the California Association of Food Banks and the Regional Coordinator of the California Hunger Action Coalition. In these posts she served as an energetic, devoted and tireless advocate, working to ensure that Imperial County received its full share of available resources. She has also served as Past President of the El Centro Host Lions Club and Board Member of the Ocotillo Community Church.
Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire US/Mexico border. Vargas was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2012. He represented the 40th California State Senate District from 2010-2012, the 79th California State Assembly District from 2000 – 2006 and served on the San Diego City Council from 1993 – 2000.
